There’s something especially meaningful about photographing families during seasons of transition—moments when time feels both fleeting and deeply important. This San Diego family session was exactly that. My clients, a young family of three, adventured with me in a wide, open grassy field to celebrate their daughter turning two, while also capturing memories before dad’s upcoming military deployment.

From the very beginning, this session felt different in the best way. It wasn’t just about milestone photos or a yearly tradition—it was about holding onto a moment in time. With dad preparing to be away, every laugh, every hug, and every small interaction carried a little more weight. A little more “core memory”.

The location couldn’t have been more perfect. Nestled in a quiet area of San Diego, the field stretched endlessly with soft green grass swaying in the breeze. But what truly made it unique? The free-roaming cows. Yes—actual cows casually wandering in the background, adding an unexpected charm that turned this already special session into something unforgettable. I loved that I could give that experience alongside the moments that ensued to this family. Client experience during a session is so important to me.

When I first suggested incorporating the cows into a few shots, I wasn’t sure how they’d feel. Not every family is immediately on board with unpredictable elements, especially with a toddler involved. But this family? They embraced it completely and encouraged it. Their easygoing nature and willingness to trust the creative process made all the difference.

Their daughter, just shy of turning two, was full of curiosity and personality. At that age, there’s no forcing poses or rigid expectations—you simply follow their lead. And she led us straight into magic. Whether she was toddling through the grass, pointing excitedly at the cows, or snuggling into her parents, every moment felt genuine and full of life.

Mom and dad were incredible together. There was a quiet strength in their connection, the kind that comes from shared experiences and deep understanding. You could see it in the way they looked at each other, and even more so in how they interacted with their daughter. These weren’t just posed moments—they were real glimpses into their everyday love. You could feel the love and joy in their home and family radiating into their interactions.

One of my favorite parts of this San Diego family session was how naturally everything unfolded. We didn’t rush. We didn’t force anything. Instead, we leaned into the unpredictability—the shifting light, the wandering cows, and the spontaneous joy of a toddler exploring her surroundings. Did I mention, the bubbles? Just perfection.

At one point, a few cows wandered closer than expected, and instead of stepping back, the family leaned in. We captured some of the most playful and unique images during that time—mom laughing, dad holding their daughter up as she pointed in fascination, all framed by these gentle, curious animals. It was the kind of moment you can’t plan, only embrace.

Sessions like this are a reminder that perfection isn’t about everything going “just right.” It’s about connection, presence, and letting moments happen as they are. This family understood that fully. They didn’t worry about dirt on their clothes or whether their daughter stayed still. They focused on being together—and that’s exactly what made their gallery so timeless.

As the sun began to set, the golden light wrapped around them in the most epic way. Those final moments felt almost cinematic—soft, warm, and full of emotion. Dad held his daughter a little longer, a little tighter. Mom leaned into them both. And for a brief moment, time felt still.

Knowing that these images would carry them through an upcoming period of distance made them even more meaningful. Photographs have a way of memorializing not just how things looked, but how they felt. And for this family, these photos will serve as a reminder of love, connection, and togetherness during a time when those things matter most.

This San Diego family session wasn’t just about documenting a birthday—it was about telling a story. A story of a growing family, of resilience, of joy in the in-between moments, and of love that remains strong no matter the distance.

To families considering a session during a meaningful season of life, my take is simple: it always a yes. Say yes to the imperfect, the unexpected, and the beautifully unplanned. Some of the most treasured memories come from moments you never could have predicted—like a grassy field, a few wandering cows, and a family simply being together.

Because in the end, those are the moments that matter most.

Let’s make magic!
